“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” – Romans 4:17..

For someone that have struggles with mental health issues, it took me a while to actually assimilate biblical peace with mental health. Those two are actually the same thing. Today when i come across the word peace in the bible I refer it to my anxiety which is something I have been battling with for a very longtime. Ever since this conviction I have been able to handle my anxiety better.

If we are being honest a lot of married people suffer from mental health issues which stem from our different unique marriage challenges, parenting, careers, basically adulting is a-lot. The truth is while we work through our marriages and try to solve and come up with ways to move forward the emotional damage has been done, the trauma whether we decide to deal with it or sweep it under the carpet, it remains. I always laugh with my close married friends that actually marriage is breaking up and falling in love all over again. Now combine this with all the other  pressures of life , peace becomes a distant relative and depression, anxiety is a closer enemy.

The bible says “Peace” is the definition of the Kingdom of God, when we have peace it means we are walking closer with Jesus, the holy spirit is working actively within us. The absence of peace in our lives means we are walking further away from God. I remember before, when I stumbled upon challenges the first thing I would do is try to solve it by myself (imagine a whole christian), I would call my close friends, my sister and mom and try to find any sort of emotional help and after every call none of their calls would make me feel better. I would vent but still would be without peace . My mom would tell me to pray and as much as I am a Christian at that time, when emotions are riding high the last thing you want to hear is someone tell you to pray hahaha LOL (I promise you thats when the devil has found ground), the last thing you want to do is pray and that’s exactly when you need to pray. Phillipians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.And the PEACE of God, which transcends will GUARD your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. When we are anxious and we pray the peace of God guards our minds and hearts.Last week I came across a new revelation that that blew my mind by GodsGift Mccoy on Facebook, Psalm 23, “He anoints my head with oil”. McCoy explains that there are flies that like to torment sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils which turn into worms and drive the sheep to beat their head against a rock, sometimes to death. Their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects. So the shepherd anoints their whole head with oil. Then there is peace. That oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep. The oil represents the peace that we have during our worrisome thoughts that invade our mind over and over. It also represents peace that surpasses that all understanding during the storms in our lives, it becomes like a barrier between us and our anxiety.

To continue to emphasize more on the substance of peace in our lives, Peace is among other things mentioned in the full armor of God while we are waging war against the devil. Ephesians 6:15, “and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” Can you imagine going to a battle without fitted shoes? It would definitely limit our ability to fight in all the terrains of the battlefield. Remember our feet help us with stability. Our shoes help us to walk through rough areas of the battlefield, and that is our peace, without our peace in the battlefield with the devil we not stable mentally to fight.

The only way to have peace and sanity despite the chaos going on in our lives is when we submit yourself under the will of God and walk with Jesus mind body and spirit. Its true Christians do not pray, the bible says pray without ceasing, every single breath we take we live under the spirit not the flesh (remember the bible says spirit and the flesh are in constant rift) , and Galatians 5:25  mentions peace as one of the fruits of spirit. Only when we fully submit ourselves then can we fully have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, and have full control of our minds (sanity) and body. When I battled with peace I was still a christian, I trusted myself and people more, you might think otherwise but if, when you go through challenges , you don’t pray first or you deal with things on your own before asking God for guidance , its an indication you are walking further away from God. Joyce Meyer says trust God the same way you would trust a chair, when you sit on a chair, you know it’s not going to fall. Today when I feel anxious, when things are not going my way and my thoughts overpower me, I try to recall when was the last time I prayed or had praise and worship, I always have my answer. I then call out to the heavens. That is how I maintain my mental stability, by submitting under Gods Kingdom.
